Champion Sooners Playing for a Higher Purpose

Newly crowned softball national champion Oklahoma continues its chase of something bigger than a championship trophy. (video)

As the University of Oklahoma softball team chased down its dream of winning the 2013 national championship, head coach Patty Gasso and players Lauren Chamberlain, Brianna Turang and Michelle Gascoigne recently discussed their spiritual journey since a crushing defeat in the final game of the national championship series just a year ago in a video produced by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Joined by team chaplain Sarah Roberts of FCA, the coach and players remember the heartache of the near-miss in the 2012 title game and how that moment provided a powerful lesson that reached far beyond the diamond. Gasso shared her view of the responsibilities of a head coach, what she hopes her legacy will be and the importance of FCA’s presence on campus, while the players discussed what makes Gasso such a strong role model and how she has prepared them for life after college.

With goals far more important than just picking up wins on the softball diamond, the video displays the power of a coach who loves her players and a team with a higher purpose.
